Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal
There is no better way of seeing this old building than while chugging along in the tram through Central heading west. The road itself snakes around the corner and gives it the attention it deserves.
This old building looks better than ever after its last round of overhauls completed in 2015. The building is a landmark that represents the ongoing one country two systems that came into effect back in 1997. The legal system is a carryover from the old colonial days and not only gives people those old rights but is important for commerce in the region.
The Old Supreme Court and now Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal,, which housed the Legislative Council Chambers from 1985 to 2011. It was built on reclaimed land using hundreds of Chinese fir-tree piles as foundations. The building was opened on 15 January 1912 by the Governor, Sir Frederick Lugard. The three-story granite building is neo-classical in style supported by tall ionic columns. The most outstanding feature of the building is the pediment in the center portion which is surmounted by a blind-folded statue of Justice, represented by the Greek goddess Themis.
The Supreme Court is now a declared monument and stands dwarfed and surrounded by many famous modern buildings such as HSBC and Bank of China building.
