2013-11-09 – Hong Kong Cheung Chau Night Skies
Hong Kong Cheung Chau Night Skies
Linking the heavens above to local Hong Kong is very challenging. Shooting the city with large array of stars is almost impossible due to light pollution. Getting out to remote island like Cheung Chau makes it bit easier.
The three bright stars are Alnilam, Mintaka and Alnitak form Orion’s belt.
As a time-lapse photographer I’ve seen some amazing night time-lapses of stars from all over the world. I’ve stayed clear of shooting time-lapse of the stars as one of my key focuses is making it recognizable as linked with Hong Kong.
For those who want to shoot stars in Hong Kong I recommend going high. Get up to one of many peaks above the city. There are also many islands that have fewer inhabitants. There also many locations especially in the summer where you will find locals camped out hoping for clear skies. Clear skies can be one of the biggest challenges as a cloudless sky can turn to solid blanket of clouds in less than 30 minutes.
