Hong Kong Big Buddha Tian Tan Lantau Island
Tian Tan Buddha, also known as the Big Buddha to most tourists, is a large bronze statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, completed in 1993. It’s located at Ngong Ping, on the south-west end of Lantau Island, in Hong Kong. The statue is sited near Po Lin Monastery and symbolises the harmonious relationship between man and nature, people and faith. It is a major centre of Buddhism in Hong Kong.
To give a sense of scale the Big Buddha stands 34 meters tall. It also requires climbing 268 steps to reach the Buddha statue.
Getting to the Big Buddha is usually a day trip as its located very close to the airport and not the city itself. On most days the cable car is the best way to Ngong Ping 360 is the best way to get to its location. On the first part of the trip it has awesome panoramic view of the Hong Kong Airport that’s built on fully reclaimed land. Once you get to the highest point the view ahead is very green and mountainous. On a clear day one can see Macua that is south-west of Lantau Island. Many tourists today will go to the Big Buddha and then on to the remote village of Tai O on the west side of Lantau Island.
