Mong Kok Goldfish Street Market
Fish are such an important part of local culture that they even have a street named Goldfish Street 金魚街 in Mong Kok that caters to the local demand. Centered around the section of Tung Choi Street, north of Bute Street. As it’s focused on local market and not the tourists this is open early in the morning.
According to Feng Shui, a fish represents wealth and prosperity because the actual word in Chinese for fish, in Pinyin: yú, 魚, also translates to “abundance” 裕 Pinyin: yù.
Tourist Tips: The best time to go to local markets in Mong Kok is the morning as the elders are out shopping for the freshest produce. Head to Canton Rd experience the wet market. Walk along Shanghai Street and Portland Street to see the old world stores and many new ones selling unique products. Then head up to Goldfish Street and then cut over to Fa Yeun Street Market north of Mong Kok road. At the top of the road when you hit Prince Edward cross the street and on the right hand side is The Flower Market and at the back of that is the Bird Street Market. If you’re noticing a trend that like stores are located together that’s a Hong Kong thing. Once you find what you are looking for that can be a needle in a haystack you will find them all. If you would like a morning tour of this part of town then please use the form below to contact myself. This is an area that I lived in for a few years and I hold close to my heart.
